The No. 4 seed University of Montana women??s tennis team (9-11, 3-3 BSC) faces No. 5 seed Montana State (9-13, 2-4 BSC) Thursday at 10 a.m. (MTN) in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Big Sky Women??s Tennis Championship in Pocatello, Idaho.
The six-team tourney is scheduled to be played April 27-29 outdoors at Juniper Hills Country Club and at the ISU Tennis Courts. Montana will play its first round match at ISU. If play is forced indoors, Reed Gym will also serve as a site.
No. 3 seed Northern Arizona (8-9, 4-2 BSC) takes on No. 6 seed Eastern Washington (7-12, 1-5 BSC) in Thursday??s other quarterfinal. No. 1 seed Sacramento State (12-8, 6-0 BSC) and No. 2 seed Weber State (13-9, 5-1 BSC) receive byes to the semifinals. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. for each championship round.
Grizzlies in the Big Sky Championships:
Montana is making its 17th-straight appearance at the Big Sky Women??s Tennis Championship. Last year as the No. 5 seed, the Griz upset No. 4 seed NAU in the opening round, 4-1. UM eventually lost in the semifinals, 4-0, to No. 1 seed Sacramento State.
The Grizzlies, who have never won a conference postseason title, have missed only one league tournament (1989) in the 23 years of Big Sky and Mountain West Conference-sponsored tennis. UM??s best finish was third place in 1987, its final appearance in a Mountain West Conference tourney.
Quoting head coach Jen Anderson:
??The Bobcats are a great first round match-up for us. This time around we??ll have a slightly different lineup from our previous meeting. It??s always a tough match against MSU. They will be gunning for us because we won earlier this year. The neutral-site shouldn??t effect the match, I think both teams will be ready to go on Thursday.??
??I think the field is pretty much similar to last year. We were neck-and-neck with Weber (State) and NAU a year ago, and that??s how it shaped up this season. The four-seed isn??t exactly where we wanted to be, but we understand at this point all the remaining matches are difficult.??
Last time out:
Montana split a pair of Big Sky Conference matches last week at Weber State and Idaho State. The Grizzlies fell 5-2 to the Wildcats before their 6-1 triumph over the Bengals. Senior Jonna Schwartz went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles action for Montana. Sophomore Mari Castello and freshman Liz Walker each went 1-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.
