Montana soccer defeats Carroll, 3-1

MISSOULA, Mont. ?C The University of Montana women's soccer team opened its 2006 season with a 3-1 exhibition win over Carroll College Saturday afternoon at South Campus Stadium. The Grizzlies, who open regular-season play next weekend with matches against Utah Valley State and Wyoming, got goals from seniors Lindsay Winans and Kristina Lamberty and freshman Kiki Blake.
The exhibition match was made up of four 25-minute quarters.
"The game gave us the opportunity to play a lot of different players," said coach Neil Sedgwick. "We are still experimenting and we are still looking at what direction we are going with players. We had some great individual performances."
Lamberty opened the scoring in the second quarter. Senior MacKenzie Murphy took the original shot, which was blocked by a Carroll defender, but Lamberty picked up the loose ball and put Montana up 1-0.
Blake made it 2-0 late in the second quarter when she scored on a header off of a corner kick by junior Mahlleace Tomsin.
The Grizzlies out-shot the Fighting Saints 11-0 in the opening 50 minutes.
After a scoreless third quarter, Carroll narrowed the UM lead to 2-1 when Sarah McLaughlin scored on a penalty kick after Montana was whistled for a hand ball in the box.
Winans closed the scoring late in the fourth quarter when she beat the Carroll keeper one v one after taking a pass from sophomore Rachael Mayer.
Montana finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Nine of the Grizzlies?? 20 shots were on goal.
"I give credit to Carroll. They kept control of the ball well. They are a very technically sound team," said Sedgwick.
