Morales, Ena lead Lady Griz to exhibition win

Junior Wooden Award candidate Mandy Morales scored 14 points and freshman Sarah Ena added 13 to lead the University of Montana women's basketball team to a 73-55 exhibition victory over Northwest Sports Sunday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena. The Lady Griz close out their exhibition schedule Monday night at 7 p.m. against Deja vu, then open regular-season play next Sunday at Boise State.
Despite shooting just 24.2 percent in the first half, Montana took a 30-21 lead to the locker room. Northwest Sports opened the second half on a 13-4 run to tie the score at 34-34, the tying points coming on a Tammy Annas 3-pointer with 14:40 to play, but the Lady Griz would erupt offensively the remainder of the game, scoring 39 points over the final 13:42 to cruise to the victory.
Morales struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes, scoring three points on 1-of-6 shooting. In the second half, she went 4-for-6 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point range, to spark the Lady Griz' late surge.
Ena came off the bench to score her 13 points in just 14 minutes of action. She went 6-for-10 from the field and added seven rebounds and two steals.
Fourteen of the 15 players on Montana's roster saw significant playing time in the game, with 13 of those players getting in the scoring column.
Senior Johanna Closson led UM's dominant rebounding advantage, grabbing a team-high eight. The Lady Griz out-rebounded Northwest Sports 57-39.
Montana got out-shot in the game, 34.3 percent to 31.0 percent, but got to the line for 32 free throw attempts - hitting 24 - while Northwest Sports went 4-for-4 from the line.
Amy Taylor led Northwest Sports with 13 points. Sarah Keeler grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
