Grizzlies drop fifth straight, fall at Fullerton

The University of Montana men??s basketball team lost 79-76 in overtime at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday evening. The Grizzlies, who were playing their second overtime contest in the last three games, lost their fifth straight to fall to 5-7 on the season. The Titans improved their record to 6-2 overall.
Montana had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a layup by senior forward Andrew Strait was blocked at the last second to preserve the 62-62 score. The Grizzlies never led during the overtime period, trailing by as many as six with under a minute to play. Fullerton made three-of-four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Junior forward Jordan Hasquet registered a game-best 23 points to go with eight rebounds to lead the Grizzlies. Strait had a double-double with 14 points while matching a season-high with 10 rebounds. Junior guard Ceylon Elgin-Taylor had a season-high 14 points off the bench for UM, which was playing without senior guard Matt Martin who was out with an injury. Sophomore guard Cameron Rundles added 10 points while playing a team-high 44 minutes.
Montana shot 53.6 percent from the field, hitting on 30-of-56 shots including 8-for-20 on 3-pointers (40.0 percent). The Grizzlies made eight of their 13 free throw attempts for 61.5 percent.
The Titans out-rebounded the Grizzlies, 38-32, while registering 11 steals to the Grizzlies?? three. Montana had 17 assists and 16 turnovers, Cal State Fullerton recorded 18 assists while committing 13 turnovers.
The Titans, who defeated Montana 100-91 earlier this season in Missoula, were led offensively by guard Frank Robinson who tallied a team-best 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Forward Scott Cutley and reserve forward Marcus Crenshaw had 19 points and 16 points respectively. Cutley added a team-high 11 rebounds to go with five assists in 41 minutes of action.
Fullerton shot 45.5 percent from the field, hitting 30-of-66 from inside the arc and 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) from behind the 3-point line. The Titans went 11-of-15 from the free throw line for 73.3 percent.
Montana (5-7) returns to action on Dec. 30 with its final non-conference game against Montana Tech. Tip-time is scheduled for 2 p.m. (MST) at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula.
