Portland edges Montana, 58-57

MISSOULA ?C University of Portland sophomore guard Nik Raivio hit a three-point shot with seven seconds remaining to lead the Pilots to a 58-57 win over host The University of Montana Grizzlies Friday evening in front of 4,130 fans in UM??s Dahlberg Arena.
Montana (5-4) had taken a 56-55 lead on jump shot by junior forward Jordan Hasquet with 1:03 to go. They added another point on one-of-two free throws by sophomore guard Cameron Rundles with 35 seconds remainingm making it 57-55, UM.
Portland (3-6) then ran clock and Raivio connected on the game-winner from about two feet behind the three-point line, right in front of the Pilot??s bench.
After a timeout by each team the Grizzlies in-bounded the ball with five-plus seconds remaining. Rundles dribbled the ball the down court and he tossed a pass under the right side of the basket to Hasquet, but his short jump shot attempt occurred after time had expired.
Portland led throughout the second half, with Montana taking its first lead, 47-46, on a three-pointer by Rundles with 8:09 left in the contest. There were six lead changes after that, as well as one tie (52-52 with 2:57 to go), and Raivio??s game-winning trey hit nothing but net.
In the first half, with the scored tied 9-9, the only deadlock in the first 20 minutes, the Pilots took a 12-9 lead on a three-pointer by freshman guard Jared Stohl. Portland built a 13-point lead with 2:41 to go until intermission on another trey by Stohl. The Pilots led 29-20 at halftime.
The Griz were led by Hasquet??s 15 points, 14 of which he scored in the second half. Senior guard Matt Martin was also in double figures with 11 points, while senior forward Andrew Strait chipped in 10 points. Hasquet and Strait led Montana with 8 and 6 rebounds, respectively.
Raivio led all scorers with 17 points and made 7-of-13 field goal attempts, 2-of-3 three-pointers, and was good on his only free throw attempt. Freshman forward Kramer Knutson was also in double figures with 10 points. Raivio and freshman forward Luke Sikma led Portland with 8 rebounds each.
Montana shot only 35.1% (20-of-57) from the field, made 7-of-22 treys (31.8%), and was 10-of-12 from the free throw line. The Griz struggled in the first half, making just 7-of-29 shots for 24.1%.
Portland made 23-of-53 field goal tries for 44.2%, connected on 4-of-9 three-pointers, and were 8-of-17 from the line. The Pilots had a 41-33 advantage on the boards.
The Pilots out-scored the Grizzlies 26-16 in the paint, although Montana had the edge in points off turnovers, 16-5. The score was tied three times and there were seven lead changes.
Montana has a three-game road swing to California, playing at Pacific on Dec. 15, at Santa Clara on Dec. 17, and at Cal State Fullerton Dec. 20.
