PSU holds off Grizzlies in road game

Junior guard Jeremiah Dominguez made two free throws with five seconds remaining to lead the Portland State Vikings to a 70-68 victory over the visiting University of Montana Grizzlies Thursday evening in a Big Sky Conference game in PSU??s Stott Center (attendance: 1,272).
The Grizzlies overcame a 12-point (63-51 with 9:05 to go) halftime deficit and tied the game 68-68 with 2:05 to go on a short jump shot by freshman center Brian Qvale. Neither team could score for the next two minutes, and in the closing seconds Dominguez was fouled by Griz guard Ceylon Elgin-Taylor and then made the two charity shots for the PSU win.
Montana (3-5 Big Sky/9-12 overall) had a chance to tie the game and force an overtime when sophomore guard Cameron Rundles took a leaning, 12-foot jump shot, but his shot went in-and-out of the rim, and the Vikings (5-2 Big Sky/12-8 overall) pulled out the win.
With 13:47 left in the opening half, Dominguez, a transfer from the University of Portland, made a couple of free throws, and the Grizzlies trailed 17-2. But, Montana dug itself out of that 15-point deficit, and when UM junior forward Kyle Sharp made a short jumper the Griz had cut the Viking advantage to 25-24 with 6:03 to go until half.
The Griz ended up with a 37-34 halftime lead, thanks primarily to senior guard Matt Martin, who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field (3-of-3 on three-pointers) and 4-4 from the line, scoring 15 points in 11 minutes.
PSU battled back in the second half and regained the lead with 12:58 left on a three-point shot by senior guard Deonte Huff, making it 50-48 PSU. After Huff??s trey the Vikings led the rest of the game until Qvale??s jumper tied the game at 68-all.
Martin missed his only shot attempt in six minutes of playing time in the second half, and tied Elgin-Taylor for Griz scoring honors, as they had 15 points each. Griz senior forward Andrew Strait added 11 points, while sophomore guard Ryan Staudacher chipped in 10 points. Qvale had 6 points, a game-high (tie) 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks. UM forward Jordan Hasquet struggled in the game and was 0-of-6 from the field and did not score for the first time this season, playing 20 minutes.
Dominguez led PSU with 26 points, making 7-of-13 field goal tries and 8-of-8 free throws (Montana as a team was 7-of-7 from the line in the game), while Huff added 18 points, and Viking senior center Scott Morrison had 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Montana is at Eastern Washington on Sunday, Feb. 3, on Altitude TV at 2:05 p.m. (Mtn.), while PSU hosts Montana State on Saturday.
