Santa Clara deals Griz first home loss, 71-68

Senior center John Bryant scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the visiting Santa Clara Broncos to a 71-68 victory over the University of Montana Sunday afternoon at UM???s Dahlberg Arena.
The game was close the entire way and featured 15 lead changes and eight ties.

The last tie came with 4:35 to go, when Montana (2-4) junior guard Anthony Johnson made a pair of free throws to knot the game at 57-57. But less than a half a minute later Bryant scored on a lay-up to put the Broncos (3-4) ahead 59-57, and Santa Clara maintained a one- to six-point lead the rest of the way.

Santa Clara junior guard Perry Petty made a pair of crucial free throws with 11 seconds left to give his team a 71-68 lead.

Montana set up a last-second 3-point shot to tie the game and force an overtime, but senior forward Jordan???s Hasquet???s trey hit the back rim and the bounced off as time expired.

Johnson led Montana with a career-high 21 points. He hit 7-of-10 field goal attempts and was 6-for-7 from the line.

Hasquet was the Grizzlies??? other double-figure scorer with 20 points, along with a team-high seven rebounds.

Joining Bryant in double figures for the Broncos were freshman guards Kevin Foster and James Rahon, with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
