The Portland State Vikings showed why they won the Big Sky Conference regular-season championship this season, as they ruined The University of Montana Grizzlies?? annual ??Senior Night?? with a dominating 108-56 league win in UM??s Dahlberg Arena.
With the loss Montana goes to 8-8 (14-15 overall) in the Big Sky and tied Idaho State for fourth place. PSU improves to 13-2 and 20-9 and has now won 11 league games in a row.
Northern Arizona finished in second (11-5/20-10) place, while Weber State is third (9-6/14/13).
Despite a 76-53 loss at NAU tonight, ISU also finished 8-8 in league, but the Bengals own the tie-breaker (a 69-67 win over NAU) over the Grizzlies, and they will host Montana in a first-round game in the 2008 Intel Big Sky Conference Basketball Tournament in Pocatello next Saturday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m. (Mountain Time).
With its 91-79 home loss to Northern Colorado tonight Montana State (7-9/15-14) is now the sixth seed and will play the Wildcats in Ogden on Saturday, also a 7:00 p.m. (Mtn.) game.
PSU hosts the Big Sky??s post-season tournament in the Rose Garden in Portland, March 11-12, and will play the lowest remaining seed in the second game at approximately 9:00 p.m. (Mountain) on Tuesday, March 11. NAU plays the highest remaining seed in the first contest that day at 6:30 p.m. (Mountain).
The Vikings were red-hot the entire game and jumped to a an eye-popping 20-lead with 7:10 to go until halftime on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Tyrell Mara, making it 36-16 PSU.
PSU continued its offensive fire-power and took an almost insurmountable 32-point (57-25) lead at intermission, thanks in larger part to the play of diminutive (5-foot-6) junior guard Jeremiah Dominguez, who scored 19 points, making 7-of-9 shots from the field and 5-of-7 three-pointers. Center Scott Morrison and guard Deonte Huff, both seniors, added 10 points each for the Vikings, who out-rebounded the Grizzlies 25 to 9 in the first half.
The second half was more of the same, as PSU shot a sizzling 67.9% on 19-of-28 shooting and drained 5-of-8 treys. The Vikings led by at least 30 points for the entire second half, finishing with the 52-point win.
It was the largest margin of defeat and most points given up by Montana at home since a 32-point loss to Oral Roberts, 111-79, in the 1970-71 season. UM??s largest setback at home came in the 1913-14 season, a 50-12, or 58 point loss to Washington State.
It was an extremely disappointing home finale for Montana seniors Matt Martin and Andrew Strait, who were recognized prior to the game.
Strait was UM??s only double-figure scorer with 10 points, making it the 22nd time in the past 23 contests he has scored in double figures. Martin, who started, finished with just 4 points and made 1-of-9 shots. UM junior guard Ceylon Elgin Taylor had 8 points and 4 assists for the Griz. All 12 players on UM??s active roster played, and 11 of them scored.
Strait remains fifth in career scoring at UM with 1,604 points, and is eighth in rebounds with 717. UM junior forward Jordan Hasquet had 7 points which gives him 1,071, and he passed former guard Scott Zanon (1,070 points, 1983-87) to move to 17th on the career scoring list.
Martin has 1,005 career points, which ranks him 23rd on UM??s scoring list, and his 209 career three-pointers are the second most in UM history, while his 314 career assists keep him 10th on that list.
Dominguez scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Morrison added 17, and Huff scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Vikings made 40-of-64 shots for 62.5%, made 14-of-25 three-pointers (56.0%), were 14-of-19 (73.7%) from the line, and out-rebounded the Grizzlies 45 to 23. The Grizzlies made 17-of-52 shots (32.7%), 6-of-25 treys (24.0%), and 16-of-27 (59.3%) charity shots.
