Selvig honored by Big Sky coaching peers

University of Montana women's basketball coach Robin Selvig has been named the 2008 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year the league office announced Wednesday. Voting for the award is done by the league's head coaches. The honor marks Selvig's 18th conference coach of the year award in his 30 seasons with the Lady Griz.
The honor is Selvig's 12th Big Sky Conference accolade. He also won five Mountain West Conference and one Northwest Women's Basketball League coach of the year awards.
Selvig coached his 2007-08 Lady Griz squad to a 25-6 record and the program's 21st regular-season conference championship. Montana won the outright Big Sky title with a 13-3 league record.
By virtue of winning last weekend's Big Sky Conference Tournament with victories over Portland State and Montana State, the Lady Griz will be playing in their 17th NCAA Tournament this weekend. Montana, which earned a No. 13 seed, will be facing No. 4 Vanderbilt Saturday night at Albuquerque, N.M.
Under Selvig's guidance, junior Mandy Morales earned her third straight unanimous first team All-Big Sky Conference selection this season, while junior Britney Lohman was voted the league's Defensive Player of the Year and a second team All-Big Sky pick. Senior Johanna Closson and junior Sonya Rogers were voted honorable mention.
Rogers is the nation's top 3-point shooter, hitting 48.6 percent of her attempts from behind the arc.
Montana currently ranks in the top 12 nationally in three statistical categories: fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.396), eighth in free throw percentage (.778) and 11th in scoring offense (75.6 ppg).
At 39.6 percent from 3-point range and 77.8 percent from the free throw line, Selvig's 2007-08 team is currently the top 3-point and free throw shooting team in Montana history.
Selvig has a career record of 697-198, a winning percentage of 77.9 percent.
