The University of Montana soccer team will host its lone exhibition match this Monday, August 18, at 5 p.m. at South Campus Stadium against Carroll College. Regular-season play will begin the following Friday and Sunday, August 22 and 24, at South Campus Stadium against Washington State and Minnesota. Both matches start at 5 p.m.
Coach Neil Sedgwick is entering his fifth season at Montana, with a four-year record of 24-41-7. Twelve freshmen and one junior college transfer joined the Grizzlies' eight returning starters and 13 letter-winners.
Carroll is coming off a successful 2007 season as the Frontier Conference champions as well as the NAIA Region 1 champions. Coach Dave Thorvilson is in his second season as head coach of the Fighting Saints after two seasons as the assistant coach.
The Fighting Saints ended their 2007 season with a record of 17-2-2. They hosted and claimed the inaugural 2007 Frontier Conference championship title in Nelson Stadium in Helena with a record of 5-1, losing a lone match to Rocky Mountain, 1-0. That earned them the opportunity to host the Region 1 championship where they claimed the title.
The Saints advanced to the 2007 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship in Daytona, Florida. Seeded No. 7 overall, they defeated No. 10 seed Point Luma Nazarene, 2-1, in the round of 16. The Fighting Saints lost to Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 2-0, in the national quarterfinal round.
Carroll will have a different team this year after losing 11 seniors from its 2007 roster. The Saints lost four of the five players who received All-Region 1 honors last year. Katie Joseph (Sr., D) will be the one Fighting Saint to return with such honors. She was an NAIA second team All-America selection as well as first team All-Region 1 selection in 2007.
