Griz take season's first road trip

THE GAMES: The University of Montana Grizzlies make their first road trip of the 2009-10 season, playing the University of Denver Pioneers (1-1) on Thursday, Nov. 19, and the University of Oregon Ducks (3-0) on Monday, Nov. 23. Tip-off in DU???s Magness Arena (7,200) is at 7:00 p.m. (Mountain), while the Griz-Duck contest starts at 8:00 p.m. (Mtn.) in UO???s McArthur Court (9,087).

GRIZ LAST WEEK: At Montana 64, Loyola Marymount 63: Guard Anthony Johnson scored a team-high 22 points en route to tournament MVP honors, as the host Grizzlies held on for the win. Montana won its own tournament going 3-0, while Loyola Marymount and Boise State were both 2-1, and North Dakota was 0-3. The Lions had three shots in the last few seconds, but they all rimmed out, and UM hung on for the win. Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half. Center Brian Qvale was named to the all-tournament team, and scored 16 points.
At Montana 95, Boise State 82: All five starters scored in double figures in the win, led by Johnson???s game-high 25 points, while junior forward Raason Young tallied a career-best 22 points. Senior forward Jack McGillis added 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Qvale had 12 points and a team-leading 8 rebounds, and senior guard Ryan Staudacher added 12 points.
RECORD BOOK FTS: Johnson tied a school record by going 14-of-14 from the line in the BSU win. He tied the mark set by forward Matt Kempfert, who was also 14-of-14 from the charity stripe in a game at Boise State in 1995.
At Montana 61, North Dakota 37: Johnson scored 20 points to lead the Grizzlies over the Fighting Sioux. After a close first half, the Grizzlies went on a 14-0 run, and led 55-35 with 4:06 left in the game. UM out-scored UNC 37-15 in the second half. Vassy Banny was a spark plug off the bench, grabbing a career and game-high 10 rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
GOOD START: This is the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Griz have started 3-0. They were 5-0 that season before dropping an 84-66 game at Arizona.
