The Montana Grizzlies sprinted out of the gates and shocked the Idaho Vandals in a 75-33 victory Monday night at UM's Dahlberg Arena.
Will Cherry had a career high 24 points to lead both teams in scoring and Brian Qvale had another great performance, adding 21 points for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies never gave the Vandals a chance, starting the game with a 32-4 run. The rout started with a 3-pointer by Kareem Jamar on the Grizzlies' first possession and culminated with Cherry's 18 first half points.
The Grizzlies held a 47-12 lead at halftime.
The Grizzly defense was stingy, forcing 16 turnovers and holding Idaho to an astonishing 12 percent shooting on the night.
Jamar scored seven points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Idaho was led by Luiz Toledo who scored 16. No other Vandal scored in double digits.
The Grizzlies struggled on the road against another WAC foe Nevada, losing that game 88-71 but had no trouble dispatching their former rival by a large margin.
"Today we were ready to go from the jump," said head coach Wayne Tinkle.
The Grizzly defense was also key in the dominant victory.
"We knew that we were going to have some increased athleticism and length from this recruiting class," Tinkle said. "We look to score on the inside but that athleticism has led to great defense."
Tinkle is proud of what Cherry has done lately for the Griz.
"We had a heart-to-heart after the Utah game and since then he is accepting his leadership role," Tinkle said. "He has really stepped into that role the last few games."
Although Tinkle is happy with the performance tonight, he knows his team has a long way to go.
"We've got the makings to be a decent team, way down the road," Tinkle said.
The win bumps the Grizzlies to .500 at 2-2 and drops the Vandals to a 1-4 record.
The Grizzlies now have an eight-day break for Thanksgiving before hosting Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 30th.
