Howell leads after second round at Cowgirl

The University of Montana women???s golf team finished seventh of 23 teams following the first two rounds of play Monday in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the Octillo Golf Club in Chandler Arizona. Sophomore Lauren Howell finished in a tie for first with a two round total of 142, two strokes under par, which tied the all-time Montana record for two rounds. ????
Howell shot a first round of 73 and a second round of 69. The sophomore???s performance in the second round ties for the second lowest round ever shot by a Grizzly, done last by Krista Swanson in 2006.
Northern Arizona player Stephanie Kim shares the lead with Howell, three strokes ahead of Britney Yada of Portland State, claiming the podium of the 120-athlete field.
The Grizzlies handed in a 36-hole total of 609 and currently trail tournament leader Texas-El Paso by 15. UTEP combined for a two-round total of 594 and is trailed closely by Nevada-Reno with 598. ??
The highest-placed Big Sky school was Northern Arizona, which sits in fourth with 609, just six strokes ahead of Montana.
As windy conditions grew worse from the first to second round, the Grizzly team excelled, improving its team score by five strokes and going 307-302.
Montana will go on to contest an 18-hole final Tuesday.
