The Montana women's golf team shot a final-round 310 on Sunday to finish seventh out of 11 teams at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.
Â
It's the only tournament of the month for the Grizzlies, who will compete twice in April prior to the Big Sky Conference Championship, which will be played April 20-22 in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Â
"Definitely took another step forward," said coach Jimmy Mee. "It's encouraging to see the work that people are putting in is starting to show up on the golf course."
Â
Montana shot a 312 on Friday, a 304 on Saturday at Oakcreek Country Club.
Â
"You want to go out and play your best in every tournament but our goal is to be where we need to be when Big Sky Conference rolls around," said Mee.
Â
"I feel like we took a good step toward getting there at this tournament and getting ready for conference."
Â
Kate Bogenschutz (82-74-73) tied for 33rd after putting together the best back-to-back rounds of her collegiate career on Saturday and Sunday, playing the final 36 holes at 3-over.
Â
After bogeying her opening hole on Sunday, Bogenschutz answered two holes later with an eagle on the par-5, 524-yard 12th. She went driver, hybrid, eight-foot putt into the cup.
Â
"It was great to see Kate put up another good round today," said Mee. "This was by far her most consistent showing. Never in much trouble, just solid, free-swinging golf. It was fun to watch."
Â
Bella Johnson (75-78-80) and Hannah Ports (81-73-79) tied for 42nd, Raina Ports (77-79-78) tied for 45th and Katie Lewis (79-83-80) finished 54th.
Â
"Overall, we're very much trending in the right direction," said Mee. "We just need everybody firing on all cylinders at the same time.
Â
"There was a lot of good stuff going on for an extended period of time this weekend. There was more good-looking golf, where we're hitting to the right spots and missing to the right spots."
Â
Northern Arizona (277-286-291) won the team title by seven strokes over Gonzaga (289-291-281). Weber State (286-299-288) and Grand Canyon (289-295-289) tied for third.
Â
Gonzaga's Grace Lee (71-71-68) stormed back in the final round to tie Northern Arizona's Amy Hodgkins (65-72-73) for individual honors. Six golfers finished the tournament under par.
Â
Montana will next compete at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 7-8 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
