The Montana women's golf team opened play at the three-day Red Rocks Invitational with a round of 312 on Friday as the tournament commenced at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona, Ariz.
Â
Bella Johnson, 4-over through 13 holes, had a pair of birdies over the final five holes and led the Grizzlies with a round of 75. She is tied for 24th.
Â
Raina Ports, who carded a team-best three birdies, shot a 77, Katie Lewis a 79, Hannah Ports an 81 and Kate Bogenschutz an 82.
Â
Montana is in ninth place out of 11 teams with rounds still to be played on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
"We're trending in the right direction. There was some really good golf that took place today," said coach Jimmy Mee.
Â
"Obviously we still had some sloppiness that we can take care of going into tomorrow, but as far as ball-striking from (February's Bowling Green Intercollegiate) until now, people are hitting it much better."
Â
All five Griz golfers were over par through three holes but all five carded at least one birdie over the final 15 holes, with Montana totaling nine for the day.
Â
"Nobody really got off to a good start but quite a few people did a good job hanging in there and finishing the round strong where it feels there is a little momentum going into tomorrow," said Mee.
Â
"The greens were a little faster than we were ready for today, so we had a few too many three-putts. It will be fun to try to build off of the momentum we had at the end of today's round."
Â
Playing on one of its home courses, Northern Arizona shot an 11-under 277, with individual scores of 65, 70, 70 and 72.
Â
NAU's Amy Hodgkins, who had nine birdies for her round, leads the field at 7-under after shooting a 65.
Â
Weber State (286) is nine strokes behind the Lumberjacks. Gonzaga (289), Grand Canyon (289) and Wichita State (299) also broke 300 on Friday.
Â
Hodgkins was one of seven players under par, one of three Northern Arizona golfers. Grand Canyon's Alexis Vakasiuola shot a 66, Weber State's Sofia Fuenmayor and Adley Nelson both shot 69.
