Grizzly golf wraps up first tournament of the year

The Montana golf team held on to 11th place after the conclusion of the Circling Raven Invitational tournament in Worley, Idaho, Tuesday. The three-round, 54-hole tournament was the first of the season for the Grizzlies.
As a team, Montana improved its score every round (319-312-310) and shot 941 on the tournament.
Senior Lauren Howell (+16), led the Grizzlies, shooting 232 over three rounds. Her best round came in the third round with a score of 76. Howell finished tied for 18th and was only three strokes off a top-10 finish.
The Circling Raven was also the first outing for Emily Milberger as head coach of the Grizzlies.
"Everyone started to find their rhythm and momentum toward the end," said Milberger. "We are all excited for our upcoming weeks of tournament play."
Washington State took home the championship trophy with a final tally of 913. The Cougars took the lead in the second round with the tournament's only sub-300-stroke round (298).
The individual championship went to Caitlin McLeary from Seattle University. McLeary was four-under-par after the first two rounds, shooting 70 in each round. She followed her amazing first two rounds with 76 Tuesday in round three to finish even on the tournament.
Montana finished second among Big Sky Conference schools. Every Big Sky school was represented with the exception of Northern Colorado and Idaho State.
Portland State finished tied with San Francisco in second place, followed by Montana in 11th. Northern Arizona finished in 12th, Sacramento State 13th and Weber State, Montana State and Eastern Washington at 19th, 20th and 21st respectively.
The Grizzlies will travel to Pullman, Wash., next week to compete in the Washington State Cougar Cup. They will begin tournament play on Monday, Sept. 19, with 36 holes followed by 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
