After a lengthy winter break, the Montana Grizzly women's tennis team is headed back out on the courts in its first match of the spring.
The team competes against Minnesota and Marquette on Jan. 19-20 in Minneapolis.
The women take on the Minnesota Gophers at 4 p.m. on Saturday. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 2008. In the two Montana and Minnesota have played, Minnesota has won both time. The Gophers are currently ranked No. 41 in the nation.
Then on Sunday, Montana faces Marquette at 10 a.m.
Entering the spring season, the Grizzlies have three players ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Sophomore Haley Driver, who is playing her first with UM after transferring from Oregon, ranked No. 18 in singles. Fellow sophomore Laurence Pelchat teams up with senior Heather Davidson to rank No. 10 in doubles.
"We are excited to be back to work and competing again," says head coach Steve Ascher. "With the long break in competition, we are looking to start building match experience. We always enjoy heading to a new location and playing challenging competition. Both Minnesota and Marquette will offer great experiences and provide our players a challenge. With a great season of competition ahead, we will take each day as an opportunity to start building momentum."
Montana last competed in Fresno, Calif., at the beginning of November.
The team will be posting live match updates on both its Twitter and its UM Athletics-Tennis Facebook page. Full recaps will follow the completion of competition on GoGriz.com. Live scoring and video is also available on the University of Minnesota website.
