Montana sophomore Tara Green matched her opening-round score with a 75 Tuesday and finished tied for 20th at the Folino Invitational at the Industry Hills Golf Club in Industry Hills, Calif. The Grizzlies posted a final-round 332 to finish 11th in the tournament's 12-team field.
Green (75-83-75--233) shot a 75 Sunday to open within two of the leader, then struggled to a round of 83 on Monday. She was back in solid form Tuesday, with one birdie, 12 pars and five bogeys. She finished the tournament 15 shots off the lead.
"Tara played well today," UM coach Emily Milberger said. "She had a better feel for the greens. She took some information from yesterday about how the greens are playing and used that to her advantage."
Green's four teammates, however, all had their highest scores of the tournament Tuesday. Senior Olivia Weber (78-77-82--237) shot an 82 on the par-71 course, but still managed to finish among the top 30. She tied for 28th out of 69 golfers at +24.
Freshman Hayley Bingham (79-80-87--246) came in at 87 Tuesday, junior Lindsay Reeve (83-87-88--258) finished with an 88, and freshman Phoebe Tan (82-86-92--260) posted a 92.
In the end those scores kept Montana (314-326-332--972) ahead of only Hawaii (336-333-331--1,000).
"The tournament really gives us a good idea of what we need to work on before we travel back to California next week (for the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational)," Milberger said.
"We definitely need to work on our short game and build some confidence around the greens."
Gonzaga (303-304-295--902) shot a final-round 295 Tuesday to hold off host Cal State Fullerton (315-305-293--913), which shot a tournament-low 293 in the final round. UC Riverside (316-299-302--917) came in third, 15 shots off the lead.
The results for Portland State (312-309-301--922) and Sacramento State (315-307-309--931) at the tournament show that Montana has some work to do between now and the Big Sky Conference championship in late April if the Grizzlies want to contend for their first league title since 2006.
The Vikings improved each day to finish fourth. The Hornets posted back-to-back days better than 310 after opening with a 315 Sunday to finish sixth.
Gonzaga's Raychelle Santos (74-74-70--218) was medalist by a stroke over Portland State's Aram Choi (75-72-72--219). Gonzaga's Victoria Fallgren (77-73-72--222) finished third, four strokes off the lead.
