How hot is the Montana softball program? First-year coach Jamie Pinkerton and assistant coach Melanie Meuchel announced a hitting and pitching clinic on Friday afternoon. By Tuesday morning the day-long clinic, which will be held Sunday in the West Auxiliary Gym of the Adams Center, had filled its 145 spots.
"We were pleasantly surprised at how quickly it filled and impressed by the excitement the clinic's garnered. It tells me the interest level is really high," Pinkerton said. "It shows the excitement there is for our program and for softball in the state."
Because of the number of players Pinkerton has had to turn away, he is already planning a similar clinic for either March or April.
At Sunday's clinic there will be seven different sessions for both hitting and pitching, with each lasting 60 minutes. The hitting sessions will be run by Pinkerton, the pitching clinics by Meuchel.
The session sizes were limited to 10 hitters and five pitchers in order to give players the maximum amount of instruction and interaction with the coaches. Sessions begin at 8 a.m. and run through the day.
A 90-minute session on defense, which will cover throwing mechanics and both infield and outfield positions, will conclude the day. That session begins at 4:45 p.m. and finishes at 6:15 p.m.
The date of the follow-up clinic will be announced on GoGriz.com as soon as it has been determined.
