It's a good day to be a Montana Grizzly.
The women's tennis team, after dominating Lewis-Clark State earlier in the day, trampled the Montana State Bobcats 7-0 Saturday evening at the Peak Racquet Club to win in its first conference match of 2014.
The win also gives UM a 7-2 lead in the inaugural Brawl of the Wild -- a rivalry series with a point system that includes 13 sports.
There were more Griz faithful than chairs at the Peak, which created a comforting atmosphere for the host Grizzlies. Montana, which hasn't lost to the Bobcats since 2009, won the doubles point by sweeping MSU in all three matches.
"I felt like our team was disciplined throughout the day," Head coach Steve Ascher said. "There was sets and matches today that were challenging, and we focused and stepped up. There was a lot of good things about the day, and it's always exciting to beat the Cats as well."
Haley Driver, after resting during the L-C State duel, snatched a straight set win over MSU's Iva Parapunova at No. 2 singles. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native is now 5-3 in 2013-14. Precious Gbadamosi won once again at No. 1 singles, making it three straight notches in the win column for the junior from Texas.
Junior Ashley Mackey won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0, as did Sasha Carter, 6-1, 6-2. Maddy Murray, after winning at No. 5 singles this morning, earned another singles win at No. 6.
The match did not conclude until 8:15 p.m., more than five hours after start time. Maddy Murray slipped and her racquet cut open her head, prompting a 45 minute delay. She was okay, and did finish her match.
"I think every day is a learning experience," Murray said. "And I'm just happy today I had a little mental spell I was able to push through. During a match things happen, and I'm just not going to let them get to me."
The Griz rose to the challenge of playing two matches in one day -- a rare occasion in the spring season.
"In the fall we do play a lot of tournaments where we're playing two or three singles matches a day," Ascher said. "They're used to it, even though it might be a little different mentally because we don't do doubleheaders very often."
The Griz have now won three straight matches and own a 3-2 record thus far in 2014. After a few weeks of practice and training, the women's tennis team plays next on March 2nd against Portland State in another conference duel at the Peak.
