MISSOULA - The Montana women's tennis team picked up eight singles wins and five doubles wins to open the fall tournament season at the Washington State Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash., over the weekend.

The Grizzlies sent eight players to the Palouse, with Rebecka Jerlardtz, Kate Prichard, Monika Fizova, Kamila Slovakova, Allison Crane, Emma Marais, Remi Demblans-Dechans and Paige Bott competing throughout the three-day tournament.

"It was a solid start to the fall. We had some good wins overall with tons of good matches and experiences gained," said Montana head coach Steve Ascher, now entering his 19^th season at UM. "It was great to see the returners and the newcomers earn some good wins as well."

Montana got off to a strong start in singles on day one, winning five of its six matches. Jerlardtz, Prichard, Fizova, Slovakova and Crane each opened the tournament with victories against Idaho opponents.

Crane opened the tournament with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Victoria Cajigas. She added another singles win on the final day, defeating Portland's Naomi Tio 6-1, 6-4.

"Allison showed grit and tenacity competing this weekend," said Ascher.

Prichard finished the weekend with two total singles victories, which included a 7-6, 6-3 win over Portland's Nadine Martinez on day three.

"Kate got a great win over U Portland," Ascher said. "She has been battling and raising the level of her game. She earned a strong win by staying composed and continuing to push through the finish line."

In doubles, Montana picked up five victories over the weekend with two of them coming from Marais and Demblans-Dechans who defeated Portland's Kiss/Djurickovic duo 6-3 in round 1 and Idaho's Schraeder/Zourkova pair 6-4 in round 2.

"Remi and Emma were connected and played inspired doubles," Ascher said. "I loved the energy they brought and how they communicate and work together. It was a joy to watch them compete."

The Grizzlies will be back in action Sept. 18-20 when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Idaho State Bengal Invite.
