UC Davis clips Griz 6-1

UC Davis held off the Montana Grizzlies men's tennis team 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, Calif.

"My initial thoughts are that they were a really good team," Head coach Kris Nord said. "I was really happy with some performances. It's just a team that was pretty dang talented one through six. Hopefully we can learn from it, but that was probably the best team we've seen so far."

In doubles play, No. 3 went unfinished, as Alec Adamson and Adam Levie defeated Semion Branzburg and Ethan Vaughn 8-4. Andrew Warren and Tomasz Soltyka lost 8-0 at No. 2, giving the Aggies the 1-0 lead.

Warren and Soltyka lost in doubles, but played the best tennis for UM in singles play. Soltyka earned the Griz its lone point, winning in three sets at No. 3 singles.

"Tomasz played the best ten point breaker I've seen all year," Nord said. "He had a frustrating second set loss after playing well in the first, and then he just played lights out in the breaker. We needed a bright spot today, and he provided it."

Waren narrowly lost at No. 1 singles, falling in three sets after an 11-9 tiebreaker set.

"Andrew had a great weekend," Nord said. "I loved how he played in singles. He fought really well today. He had chances, and we talked about not having a lull in the middle of the match, because he could have won that match. But I'm happy with where he's at right now."

Nord said the third match in three days was a steep challenge.

"It was two long travel days, our guys are outside at sea level, and they looked a little tired," Nord said. "We played probably a team that probably has the best four, five or six players we've seen all year.

"It was a little tough, but I think we played better today than yesterday against Grand canyon. The score might not reflect it, but I though the energy was better and we played better."

The Griz next play in two weeks at Boise, Idaho on March 21 and 22.
