Freshman Baylee Barckley matched her best round of the fall with a 2-over 74, and the Montana women's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a 311 Sunday at the Lady Mustang Intercollegiate at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Barckley, who opened the two-round tournament with a 75 on Saturday, finished in fifth place, just two strokes out of second. Montana finished eighth out of 11 teams after taking 10 strokes off its Saturday score.
"Our short games were better today, and our putting was better," said first-year coach Matt Higgins. "We had a little more confidence out there, which was nice to see."
Senior Phoebe Tan and sophomore Hailey Hoagland both shot 78 on Sunday. Tan improved by six strokes from Saturday's round to Sunday's, Hoagland by eight.
Junior Alexa Schendelman, who shot a 77 on Saturday, was Montana's fourth scoring player Sunday. She carded an 81.
"I think we were 10-over for our last four holes as a team, so if we could have finished, it could have been a really good round," said Higgins. "But overall it was a good day today.
"Our last two tournaments were our best two of the fall, if not scoring-wise, then at least how we played and our confidence level and putting into place what we've been practicing all fall."
UC Riverside (300-294--594) shot a 294 on Sunday to win the tournament by 15 strokes over host Cal Poly (299-310--609). Santa Clara (298-312--610) finished third.
UC Riverside's Hannah Facchini (71-70--141) won the tournament by six strokes.
Montana won't compete again until late February at the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational at Phoenix, Ariz.
"I'm really excited to get into the offseason and the training part of our schedule," added Higgins. "It will be good for us and should have us excited to get back out there next spring."
