"We played better today, but we didn't play any facet of the game particularly well," head coach Jamie Pinkerton said. "We need to bet more consistent if we want to win."
Game 1: Montana 2, Kent State 8
The Kent State Golden Flashes defeated the Montana Griz 8-2, in Montana's first game of the San Diego Classic. The Golden Flashes out hit the Griz 14 to 5, and neither team committed an error in the game.
Kenzie Cole got the loss for the Griz, giving up six runs in four innings. She struck out two batters and walked three.
Kent State started the game off with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Montana was able to respond.
Gabby Martinez started the inning off with a single to left field, and MaKenna McGill advanced her to second base with a sacrifice bunt.
Lexie Brenneis brought Martinez home to give the Griz their first run of the day, and then Bethany Olea reached on a fielders choice, bringing home Ashlyn Lyons who had reached base after being hit by a pitch.
These were the only two runs Montana would score all game. Kent State regained the lead in the top of the third, and tallied three more runs in the fourth inning, and two more in the fifth.
"We need to be more patient and hit our pitch when we are ahead in the count," Pinkerton said. "And when we a couple runners on, we need to be able to string some hits together."
Game 2: Montana 3, San Diego 5
The Montana Griz lost 5-3 to San Diego in their second game of the day; the Griz were outhit 8-7 by the Toreros.
"We played a full seven, we just had a bad first inning," Pinkerton said.
San Diego scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, after that, Montana made a pitching change to Cole.
"Kenzie came out and played her best game of the year," Pinkerton said.
Cole allowed only one run in her second outing of the day, walking only one batter and striking out three.
Montana would finally get on the board in the top of the third inning after Brenneis singled up the middle bringing in McKenzie Phillips.
Brenneis finished the game 2 for 2, with one RBI. Delene Colburn also finished the game with an RBI for the Griz.
Looking forward:
