Montana sophomore Hailey Hoagland shot a final-round, 1-over 73 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 14th at the Washington State Cougar Cup at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, Wash. It was her best finish as a collegiate golfer.
Hoagland opened the tournament on Monday with rounds of 77 and an even-par 72, the latter matching her best round as a Grizzly. Her three-round score of 222 knocked eight strokes off her previous best for a 54-hole tournament.
Hoagland entered the day tied for 17th and held steady with two birdies and three bogeys. She played just a single hole at the tournament -- No. 18 in Monday's opening round -- to double bogey.
Despite Hoagland's efforts, Montana finished 11th out of 12 teams. The Grizzlies shot rounds of 316, 311 and 310 on a course and in conditions that were favorable for low scores.
Washington State (295-286-285) won on its home course by 14 strokes over Idaho (297-290-293) and 16 over Fresno State (300-286-296). Sacramento State (300-290-307) and Montana State (299-298-300) finished fourth and fifth, giving the Big Sky Conference three teams in the top five.
Hoagland was the only Montana golfer to finish in the top 45. Freshman Sadie Crippen (77-80-80) tied for 48th, junior Amanda Kahn (82-78-78) tied for 55th, and senior Phoebe Tan (85-72-83), who was competing as an individual, finished 59th.
Washington State's Cherokee Kim (69-69-73) ended the tournament at 5-under. She finished two shots clear of Cal State Fullerton's Martina Edberg (74-65-74) and Fresno State's Joanna Kim (73-69-71).
Idaho's Michelle Kim (70-73-72), at 1-under, was the Big Sky's top finisher.
Montana will compete next Monday and Tuesday at the Rose City Collegiate, which will be played at the Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore.
