The Montana golf team shot a final-round 307 to finish seventh Tuesday at the Washington State Cougar Cup at Pullman, Wash.

The Grizzlies, who were making their fall debut, carded rounds of 307 and 302 on Monday, giving them a three-round total of 916, 21 strokes better than they scored last fall on WSU's Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

For the second straight round, Montana was led by freshman Caitlyn Villatora (78-74-74--226), who followed up Monday's second-round, 2-over 74 with another 74 on Tuesday.

It was the best start for a Montana freshman in their first collegiate tournament since Barbora Bakova shot a 3-over 216 at the 2013 Grizzly Invitational.

Villatora tied for 25th, one stroke behind junior Hailey Hoagland (74-76-75--225), who played her final 11 holes Tuesday at 1-under and came in with a 75.

Junior Kari Opatz (74-77-81--232) tied for 36th, sophomore Baylee Barckley (82-76-77--235) tied for 46th, freshman Teigan Avery (81-76-83--240) tied for 54th.

Senior Alexa Schendelman (83-78-77--238) was the top finisher among the five Montana players competing as individuals. After opening with an 83 on Monday morning, Schendelman fired rounds of 78 and 77.

Idaho (291-292-281--864) shot a final round 281 on Tuesday to rally past Washington State (289-293-286--868) and win the team title. The Vandals, who won last spring's Big Sky championship, had individual scores of 68, 69, 72 and 72 to finish 7-under for the tournament's final round.

The Cougars tied for second with Cal State Fullerton (293-292-283--868), which was led by medalist Martina Edberg (72-68-66--206), who finished 10-under and set course records for low round and lowest three-round total.

Idaho's Sophie Hausmann (73-71-69--213) and Amy Hasenoehrl (73-72-68--213) tied for second at 3-under.

Montana will compete next Monday and Tuesday at Portland State's seventh annual Rose City Collegiate, which will be played at the Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore.
