Freshman standout Julia Ronney won the second title of her college career and fellow freshman Bianca Bostrom advanced to the semifinal of the Orange singles flight as the Montana women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season at the Barb Chandler Classic in Boise, Idaho, over the weekend.
Bostrom also advanced to the semifinal of the doubles bracket along with her partner, senior Cam Kincaid, putting the Griz in with a shot to win three different brackets.
Ronney rebounded from a first-round loss to eventual tournament champion Wilhelmina Palmer of Boise State in to win the Blue Flight Consolation Championship with three-straight wins in the back draw.
"She really battled back after dropping the first, and just did a good job of changing her tactics a little bit and taking some risks," said head coach Steve Ascher. "She stepped it up mentally as well, so it was a good finish."
Ronney bookended her fall season with tournament wins after opening the year with a title at the Idaho State Invitational in September.
The San Diego native bounced back from a first set loss to defeat ISU's Huibre-Mare Botes in the Blue Flight consolation final in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
Bostrom picked up a big win over Utah State's Alexandra Taylor in the Orange Flight quarterfinal (6-1, 6-1) after defeating Andrea Osborn of Idaho State in the opening round.
In the semifinal, Bostrom pushed Boise State's Vanessa Timm to the limit in both sets before falling 6-7, 5-7.
In doubles Bostrom and Kincaid got revenge on Timm with her partner Jovana Kuljanin, defeating the Bronco pair 8-5 in the quarterfinal, advancing to the semi where they fell to the Worrall/Nelson pair from Eastern Washington, 8-2.
"Both Cam and Bianca have been really solid, steady, and on top of it," said Ascher. "So it was a great finish for them."
The newly minted doubles pair of Catherine Orfanos and Eimear Maher Also picked up a doubles win in the first round, defeating EWU's Broussard/Sottile pair 8-2 to advance to the quarters where they fell to the Poling/Palmer pair 8-3.
In the Orange Flight consolation bracket, Milica Panic defeated Marta Heinen of EWU to advance to the semifinal, eventually falling to Kristen Newell of Idaho State, 6-2, 7-5.
With a bow on the fall season, Ascher and the Grizzlies now return to Missoula to begin preparation for the duals championship season in the spring.
"I think we figured out some stuff and this tournament gave me some more food for thought," said Ascher. "Now I have to let it marinate a bit and think about what the next steps are to move the program forward."
