Hallgren wins singles draw to lead Griz at Weber State

The Montana men's tennis team picked up its third bracket title in two fall tournaments over the weekend as the Grizzlies hit the courts at Weber State's Wildcat Invite in Ogden, Utah.

Junior Ludvig Hallgren picked up the first tournament win of his career, taking the B singles title with a 6-3,3-0 3-0 win over the home team's Nick Werner, and knocked off players from Idaho State, Southern Utah, and Montana State en-route to the final.

"I'm really happy for Ludvig. These fall tourney titles are not easy to get, so it was fun for him. He deserved it. He played really well and kind of dominated everybody," said head coach Jason Brown. "He's playing like an upperclassman."

After Freshman Oisin Shaffrey took home a title last week, two of Montana's other first-year players also picked up some win at Weber, with Pontus Hallgren and Jack Yount advancing to the Flight B doubles championship, where they fell to WSU's Li/Werner pair.

Other Grizzly highlights include senior Alex Canellopoulos battling an injury to advance through to the third/fourth-place match of the A singles flight and freshman Milo Benn taking third in the B singles flight with a three-set win over Montana State's Marcos Zelver (6-2,2-6,10-8).

Fellow freshman Finn Anderson also finished the tournament strong with a fifth-place win, a marked improvement for the Whitefish native in his second outing of college tennis.

"Finn Anderson really stepped up, he was much more relaxed in his second tournament," added Brown.

The overall competition at the Wildcat Invite was well above the first tourney UM played in at EWU last week, however, with Air Force headlining mostly Big Sky lineup. With a young team featuring six freshmen in the nine-man lineup, Montana struggled at times in Ogden, but Brown was still able to draw positives from the experience.

"We set the bar very high these days, so we were kind of disappointed in the overall results," Brown said. "The upside is that kids who didn't play well at Eastern did well down there, so, over two tournaments, everybody has played well."

Montana will be looking for consistency after a quick turnaround in Missoula as the Griz head to Boise for their premiere fall tournament, the Dar Walters Classic, which traditionally features strong programs from the Pac-12 and Mountain West, Oct. 5-7.
