Grizzlies excited for full return

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The season officially began in December, with a split meet in both Cheney and Bozeman. Then there was a long – a very long – gap. The nice thing about competing in one of the early-season meets is that you get an early evaluation of where your team is at. The downside is the waiting game, with athletes shortly after dispersing for winter break.
Now, for the first time, the entire team is together, in the same location and for a full meet. The Grizzlies will travel east to Bozeman for the Montana State Open on Friday. The annual meet is a fun one, featuring athletes from all across the Treasure State, including Carroll College, MSU Billings, Providence and Rocky Mountain, in addition to Montana and Montana State.
Coming off of a season in which many of Montana's top athletes were purposefully redshirted, outside expectations are timid. The women received 58 points in the preseason poll, good for seventh place out of 11 teams, while the men earned 41 points for eighth place. Northern Arizona was the unanimous favorite to win both titles.
Inside its own walls, though, Montana believes it has better teams than what it's been given credit for.
And early results show reason for optimism. Head coach Brian Schweyen called the performances from December's Candy Cane and Bobcat Preview meets the best he's seen in a long time, perhaps ever, especially when considering 27 freshmen competed for the first time, plus nearly a dozen redshirts who missed last year.
"I was really, really impressed with what we saw, across the board," Schweyen said. "From the freshmen to the veterans, they've been busting their butts to get in a good place physically, and I do think we're further along than we've been in a long time."
The potential is there, but Schweyen is sticking to his motto for the year of taking things day by day. That will continue Friday and maintain throughout the year.
"I really want to change the mindset and make it clear that there are no important meets or important practices, but every day you wake up is an opportunity to do something spectacular," the veteran coach said. "Every day, if you take that initiative and have that mindset, is as important as any day you've ever had."
Action will begin Friday at 3:30 p.m. Competing for Montana will be:
