When Griz fans sit down for their evening TV viewing tonight, they will want to keep an eye out for a familiar face.
Former University of Montana quarterback and wide receiver Tyler Lucas is set to represent the Grizzlies on a different field this week, when the new NBC obstacle-course competition "The Titan Games" premieres on Thursday, Jan. 3, hosted by one of the world's biggest stars, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Lucas, who played for the Griz as a senior in 2015 after transferring from Penn State, will team up with his older brother Kyle (also a former college football player) as two of just 64 contestants to make it through a grueling tryout process involving over 10,000 athletes.
After advancing through a tryout combine and wrapping filming for The Titan Games in September, Lucas will make his national television debut tonight when the series opens its 10-episode run at 7 p.m. (MT) on NBC.
"Being a part of the Titan Games was really a once in a lifetime experience. I was very fortunate and blessed to be granted this opportunity," said Lucas, who considers The Rock a childhood hero and a "genuinely humble, caring, down to earth guy."
Lucas was a versatile athlete at UM, used mainly as a wildcat QB and backup receiver for the Grizzlies during the 2015 playoff run. He made four appearances that season, rushing for 26 yards on three attempts with a long of 22 yards against North Dakota.
Since graduating, he has followed a family tradition of military service as a computer analyst for the United States Air Force in Germany where he is currently stationed, commuting to Los Angeles to compete on the show.
He's also continued his football career in the German Football League, taking many of the lessons he learned in the weight room at Montana with him there, and into training for his shot at stardom on national television.
"My time in Montana really helped prepare me for this. Coach Matt Nicholson had some great workouts that I still do to this day, and that translated well to the Titan Games combine," said Lucas.
"Playing for the Griz also taught me discipline and staying dedicated, and that's what you need for this show. I really enjoyed my time there, and everything I learned helped put me in a position to succeed."
While details are under wraps, Lucas and his brother will be competing in physically demanding head-to-head competitions "designed to test the mind, body, and heart," according to the show's website.
Contestants will be chasing the show's $100,000 grand prize, and winners will earn the title "Titan."
