BOZEMAN, Mont. – While the majority of track & field athletes will return to campus this week and begin competition on Friday at the Montana State Open, a handful of athletes will get a jump start, competing in the MSU Multis (Monday and Tuesday in Bozeman).
Action begins Monday at 1 p.m., with all five events of the women's pentathlon and the first four events of the men's heptathlon. The final three events of the heptathlon will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. Competing in the pentathlon will be Jaree Mane, Erika McLeod and Jansen Ziola. In the men's heptathlon, Aidan Diggs and Josh Riley will represent Montana.
The Grizzlies have had plenty of recent success in the pentathlon, winning three consecutive individual titles at the Big Sky indoor championships. Both winners – Ziola in 2018 and McLeod in both 2016 and 2017 – will represent Montana this week in the event. So will Mane, who opened her sophomore season with a seventh-place performance at the Candy Cane XI in December, including the third-best mark out of 21 throwers in the shot put (37-6).
Ziola placed fourth overall at the meet, including second in both the 55-meter hurdles and long jump, while McLeod made her return to competition with authority, setting meet and track records with her overall score of 3,891. Three days later, she was recognized for her achievement, being named the Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week.
Riley, a junior, has experience in the heptathlon, scoring in the event at the 2017 Big Sky indoor championships. He also has scored twice in the longer, outdoor form – the decathlon. For Diggs, this will be the freshmen's second collegiate competition. If the first was a sign of things to come, Griz fans will be happy. The Goodyear, Ariz., native led all Griz athletes with a fifth-place finish at the Candy Cane XI. Speed is his forte, as her won both the 55 meters (6.59) and 55-meter hurdles (7.92) – beating out the 11 other competitors.
