Â
Lady Griz insider:
Â
If South Dakota was a bit of an unknown last season when the Coyotes came to Missoula and picked apart Montana in a 23-point win, everyone knows what to expect this season, especially with four starters and 11 letterwinners back.
Â
"They have basically everybody back and are a year better playing together," said Lady Griz coach Shannon Schweyen, who used South Dakota as an example for her team as last year progressed.
Â
"Of all the teams we played last year, they impressed me the most, with the style they played, the execution they had and the way they played together."
Â
Now Montana gets another shot at South Dakota, a team with an early-season RPI of 15 due to its strength of schedule and its 10 wins and one loss while playing that schedule.
Â
The Lady Griz have an RPI of 226.
Â
"They are balanced and shooting an unbelievable percentage from both three and the field," said Schweyen, noting a team that went 17 for 29 from the arc in its 91-48 win over Northern Illinois.
Â
Four times this season South Dakota has made 11 or more triples.
Â
"They've played some really good teams, and they've still been putting up numbers like crazy," added Schweyen. "So obviously it's tough to shut them down.
Â
"You've got to limit their easy ones and hope they don't have a great night shooting it from three."
Â
South Dakota takes more than 38 percent of its shots from 3-point range, compared to 25.1 percent for Montana. The Coyotes are shooting 51.9 percent on shots inside the arc.
Â
"They are really good at getting easy ones," said Schweyen, "because they run you through stuff over and over and wait for you to break down. We've got to be at our best as far as communicating.
Â
"The girls are fired up about playing in front of some people and against a good, quality opponent. It's what you hope for in the nonconference. To get two top-25 teams is great for us in the preseason."
Â
Montana takes a two-game winning streak to South Dakota, each win earned a different way.
Â
At Cal State Fullerton, the Lady Griz built a 17-point first-half lead and led by 16 in the third quarter before the Titans rallied.
Â
A 16-3 run gave Fullerton a 3-point, and the Titans still led by two, 69-67, with less than 90 seconds to play, but a big 3-pointer by Taylor Goligoski and some key defensive stops gave Montana the win.
Â
Last Saturday at Utah Valley, Montana was tied 30-30 at the half, but the Wolverines used a good start to the third quarter to build a 43-34 lead.
Â
An 8-0 run, with six points coming from Jamie Pickens, got Montana back into the game, and the Lady Griz used a big finish to steadily pull away.
Â
"This group is just grinding and getting it done. They are coming together and playing hard for each other, and you have to do that to pull some of these tough ones out," said Schweyen.
Â
"Hopefully we can build on those and take something away and go into this one with some confidence. Both of those experiences should help us in this one."
Â
