OGDEN, Utah – For the third time in five weeks, a Montana basketball player has been named the Big Sky Conference Ready Nutrition Player of the Week. Junior Sayeed Pridgett picked up his second award after averaging 20.0 points on .842 shooting last week in wins over Idaho and Eastern Washington.
In addition to his 20.0 points-per-game average on 16-of-19 shooting, Pridgett added 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists per game.
Against Idaho, the Oakland, Calif., product led all players with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting. He scored UM's first six points as the Griz never trailed. The 41-point victory was Montana's largest since November 2010, and its largest in a Big Sky game since the 1996-97 season.
Two nights later, Pridgett nearly had a double-double vs. Eastern Washington, recording 19 points and nine rebounds, despite playing just 24 minutes. He shot 8-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from long range. The win was the 100th in Travis DeCuire's career.
During conference play, he is the only player to rank in the top 20 for scoring (13.2, 18th), rebounding (5.1, 18th), field-goal percentage (.588, second), assists (2.3, 15th) and steals (1.3, 10th). His .583 shooting percentage overall is the 34th-best in the nation. Of those ahead of him, most are post players with shorter range; Pridgett, at 6-5, is taller than just two of them.
Pridgett has elevated his role from the team's sixth man a year ago, averaging 8.4 points off the bench, to 12.9 in 2018-19. He has scored at least eight points in all but one game, and has led the Griz in scoring five times.
A large part of his progression has been his ability to shoot from deep. Through his first two collegiate seasons, Pridgett was 4-of-26 from three-point range (.154). This year, he's shooting .448 from beyond the arc (.448).
Montana had zero award winners through the first nine weeks of the season, but has earned three in the past five weeks. The Grizzlies hit the road this week, traveling to third-place Weber State (Thursday) and Idaho State (Saturday). Montana has won six of its past seven road games, including three in a row. Overall, the Grizzlies are on a seven game winning streak and are in first place in the conference standings.
