The Montana softball team lost its final game of the Silicon Valley Classic on Sunday morning, falling 9-1 to Ball State at the San Jose State Softball Complex.
Â
The Grizzlies (3-12) were out-hit by just three, 10-7, but it's when those hits came for the Cardinals (11-5) that made all the difference.
Â
Ball State was 9 for 20 with runners on base and even better when those runners were in scoring position, going 7 for 14.
Â
The Cardinals scored five times on four hits in the second and added four more runs across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings against Griz starter Maddy Stensby and Michaela Hood in relief.
Â
Stensby, who gave up for runs in 1 1/3 innings, took the loss to drop to 0-4.
Â
Montana left seven on base through the first three innings, the bases loaded in the second, when Sarah Venker, who improved to 5-0 with the win, struck out Cami Sellers in one of the game's key moments.
Â
The Grizzlies left nine on base for the game and had just a pair of hits with runners on base.
Â
Montana scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh, when Maygen McGrath hit a two-out home run to left-center, her third of the season.
Â
Montana will return to the Bay Area for next weekend's Stanford Invitational. The Grizzlies will play games against North Dakota State, Stanford, Cal Poly and Northwestern.
