Griz hang with Cowboys in Laramie

The Montana women's tennis team closed the gap with another of the top teams in the region even further on Saturday in a loss to Wyoming that was more competitive than the 7-0 scoreline would indicate.
While the Griz (2-10, 2-0 BSC) are still seeking their first nonconference win of the year amid a brutal schedule, they still came away from the loss to the Cowboys (10-5, 0-0 MW) with plenty of positives heading into an important league match at Northern Colorado Sunday.
"It was a super competitive match. We had some chances at sets and pushing matches even closer. I'm proud of how we competed and how we got after it today," said head coach Steve Ascher.
In doubles, Montana's court-two pair of Lauren Dunlap and Nathalie Joanlanne were close to picking up a win, falling 4-6 to WYO's Royo/Oreshkina pair. On court one UM's standout sophomore pair Julia Ronney and Bianca Bostrom were neck and neck, trailing 4-5 when UW clinched the point on court three.
In singles, Bostrom nearly pulled out a first-set win on court three before falling 5-7, 2-6. Senior Lidia Dukic was equally competitive on court five, dropping the first set 4-6 before nearly clinching the second 5-7.
Joanlanne, UM's other senior, also nearly picked up a second-set win, but dropped her court-four match 3-6, 5-7.
The Grizzlies now turn their attention to UNC in Greeley tomorrow, entering the match with a chance to move to 3-0 in Big Sky play. UM will also be looking to avenge a 2017 4-3 road loss to the Bears.
With the bulk of the Big Sky season around the corner and three home matches left on the schedule, a 3-0 start to conference play would go a long way toward keeping the Griz at the top of the league table. Only the top-six teams get the chance to compete at the annual Big Sky championship tournament, a place UM hasn't been since 2015.
