Outdoor season begins this weekend in Missoula
3/27/2019 7:25:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Just five weeks after the conclusion of the 2019 indoor season, Montana is geared up and ready to open the 2019 outdoor track & field season. The Grizzlies will host Big Sky foes Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana State and Portland State in the Al Manuel Northwest Challenge.
Â
Schedule of Events: Fans who want the full experience of the weekend can kick off their track viewing on Friday afternoon with the women's hammer throw (3 p.m.) and men's hammer throw (4:45 p.m.). The full meet will pick back up Saturday morning, beginning with the women's javelin at 10 a.m. Running events start with the women's steeplechase at noon. A full schedule can be found here.
Â
High expectations/preseason poll: After annually finishing near the top of the Big Sky standings, Montana's finishes of ninth (men) and 10th (women) a year ago were out of the norm, but not necessarily unexpected, considering injuries and who the Grizzlies were intentionally redshirting. Now, a year later, Montana is near full strength and poised to make another run at a Big Sky title, particularly on the women's side.
Â
Montana's women were picked to finish fourth out of 11 teams, and were one of three schools to earn a first-place vote from fellow head coaches in the annual preseason poll. Montana earned 79 points, trailing only Northern Arizona (113, six first-place votes), Sacramento State (113, four first-place votes) and Montana State (94). The Grizzlies were ahead of Weber State, Southern Utah, Idaho State, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Northern Colorado and Portland State.
Â
The men earned 41 points, good for ninth place, in the preseason poll. Northern Arizona (121) earned all 11 first-place votes, followed by Southern Utah (106), Montana State (99), Eastern Washington (87), Weber State (67), Idaho (65), Idaho State (54), Northern Colorado (42), Montana (41), Sacramento State (29) and Portland State (15).
Â
Nationally, Montana's women are ranked 105th in the USTFCCCA preseason poll, first among Big Sky schools. The men rank fourth in the Big Sky and 149th overall. Several individuals were also recognized by the USTFCCCA.
Â
Based off of personal-best marks and times, Erika McLeod ranks 17th nationally in the heptathlon. Hana Feilzer is 22nd in the hammer throw, while in the javelin, Jensen Lillquist ranks 26th on the men's side and Zena Smith is 44th for the women.
Â
There's plenty of reason to believe Montana will have success this spring: Of the 16 athletes to score at last year's Championships, 12 return, including all four NCAA Regionals qualifiers – not to mention a handful of athletes who redshirted a year ago but scored in previous seasons.
Â
Growth during indoor season: Montana had 15 point-scorers at last month's indoor championships, including several underclassmen, but the biggest highlights came from Erika McLeod and Hana Feilzer. McLeod set a school, conference and meet record in the pentathlon, winning the event for the third time in four seasons. Her score qualified her for the NCAA Championships, although the senior had to pull out due to an injured calf. Teammates Jansen Ziola placed second in the event with the seventh-best mark in Big Sky history. Both athletes ranked in the top 25 nationally. Feilzer, who like McLeod redshirted in 2018, set a school record in the weight throw before winning the event at the Championships.
Â
More help on the way: Montana has had several prep stars sign a National Letter of Intent over the past several months, each of which will be on the team's roster beginning in the fall. Among those who have committed to Montana since the signing period began in November are: Alisa Gilbert (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Scout Reagan (Hermiston, Ore.), Cree Bell (Hamilton, Ontario), Evan Todd (Kalispell, Mont.), Jason Upton (Missoula, Mont.), Kelly Robinson IV (Liberty Hill, Texas), Quincy Fast (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Zane Johnson (Dillon, Mont.), Beatrix Frissell (Polson, Mont.) and Holly Sudol (Everett, Wash.).
