Missoula to host track & field athletes from across the state this weekend
4/11/2019 5:39:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Grizzlies return home this weekend to host their second track & field meet over the past three weeks. In town for the 2019 Montana Open will be local athletes from across the Treasure State, including Carroll College, Montana, Montana State, MSU-Billings, Providence and Rocky Mountain College.
Â
Action begins Friday at 3 p.m. with the women's hammer throw, followed by the men's competition. The meet will resume Saturday at 10:15 a.m., with the women's javelin, women's shot put and men's long jump. A complete schedule can be found online.
Â
While the majority of Montana's athletes will be competing at home, the Grizzlies will also send 13 athletes to UCLA for the Rafer Johnson & Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. There, Montana will compete in a large meet with athletes spanning from the West Coast to Oklahoma.
Â
No one this week will be busier than Canadian Jansen Ziola. The sophomore won the pentathlon at last year's indoor Championships before redshirting last spring. She's made an early mark during the outdoor season and has big opportunities in front of her this weekend in Los Angeles, competing in six events. Among those she's registered for is the 100-meter hurdles, an event she ranks sixth in the Big Sky in.
Â
Also competing at UCLA will be the women's 800-meters trio of Madeline Hamilton, Carly Smiedala and Maryn Lowry – this week's Big Sky Women's Track Athlete of the Week. All three rank in the top eight in the Big Sky this season. Lowry, an Iowa State grad transfer, also ranks fifth in the 1,500 meters.
Â
Overall, Montana ranks in the top 10 in the Big Sky a total of 30 times, including Hana Feilzer, who leads the conference in the hammer throw.
Â
While the majority of Montana's top female athletes will be in Los Angeles, Griz fans have the opportunity to watch several of Montana's top men compete in Missoula, including: Charlie Bush (fourth in the pole vault), Sterling Reneau (fifth in the 400 meters), Brent Yeakey (fifth in the shot put and seventh in the discus), Noah Adams (sixth in the 800 meters), Paul Johnstone (sixth in the 400 meters), Callum Macnab (sixth in the 400-meter hurdles), Dylan Kipp (seventh in the javelin), Xavier Melice (seventh in the 200 meters), Chase Armstrong (eighth in the 110-meter hurdles), and Alex Mustard (eighth in the 100 meters).
Â
Also competing in Missoula, on the women's side, will be Holly Houston (fourth in the discus), Samantha Engebretsen (seventh in the 10,000 meters), Carla Nicosia (eighth in the triple jump) and Morgan Sulser (10th in the 100-meter hurdles).
Â
While Missoula has seen snow and rain throughout the week, forecasts for Saturday are dry and in the 50s.
