Montana hits homestretch of outdoor season
4/25/2019 2:54:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The 2019 outdoor track & field season has hit the homestretch. Following a week of competing in California, the Grizzlies return to the Treasure State where their final three meets will be held. The first two will be in Bozeman, beginning on Saturday with the annual Griz-Cat Dual vs. Montana State.
Â
Montana will also be in Bozeman the following weekend before capping the 2019 season with the highly anticipated Big Sky Championships at Dornblaser Field in Missoula.
Â
Last week's Bryan Clay Invitational was a good, eye-opening experience for many Grizzlies, who were competing against a loaded field of high-end athletes. In total, nearly 5,000 entries were registered for the meet, including some events featuring more than 300 competitors.
Â
Despite a strong field, Montana had some strong showings, including Dylan Kipp in the javelin – lifetime best 191-11, finishing second – and Jane Booth in the high jump – fourth out of 57 jumpers and one of six athletes to reach 5-7.25.
Â
Overall, Montana had 21 performances last weekend alone that currently rank in the top 20 in the Big Sky Conference, led by Hana Feilzer's 201-2 in the hammer throw, a figure that currently leads all Big Sky athletes.
Â
She wasn't alone, however. Olivia Ellis (1:01.27 in the 400-meter hurdles), Holly Houston (154-9 in the discus), Shawn Humphries (52-3.25 in the shot put), Paul Johnstone (48.25 in the 400 meters), Kipp (191-11 in the javelin), Maryn Lowry (4:24.72 in the 1,500 meters), Callum Macnab (53.74 in the 400-meter hurdles), Xavier Melice (21.46 in the 200 meters, Carla Nicosia (38-8.75 in the triple jump) and Jansen Ziola (4,900 points in the heptathlon) not only had season- or lifetime-best marks last weekend, but each of the times/marks would currently score at next month's Championships.
Â
Ziola, who ranks fourth in the Big Sky in the heptathlon despite competing in the event for the first time as a collegiate athlete last weekend, ranks in the top 20 in the Big Sky for six events; four of those marks have happened in the last 10 days, showing that she – as well as other Grizzlies – are beginning to peak at the right time.
Â
Saturday's Griz-Cat Dual will begin with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and women's hammer throw at 12 p.m. The meet can be watched for free on Pluto TV (ch. 238) and WatchBigSky.com. Live results are also available.
