Grizzlies travel to Bozeman for final prep
5/1/2019 1:40:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Montana will travel to Bozeman once more this weekend for the Grizzlies' final track meet of the regular season. The Tom Gage Classic is an annual meet featuring athletes from Montana, Montana State, Carroll, Providence and Montana Western.
Â
Many of the Grizzlies' top athletes will not compete this weekend, instead resting to be at full strength for the Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 8-11 in Missoula). Overall, more than 40 percent of Montana's athletes currently ranked in the top 16 in the Big Sky will not participate in their respective events.
Â
Some of the notable omissions include Jensen Lillquist in the javelin, Carly Smiedala in the 800 meters and Maryn Lowry in the 1,500 meters.
Â
Others, such as Erika McLeod and Jansen Ziola, will compete on Friday, but not necessarily in their top events. McLeod will compete in the 200 meters, 100-meter hurdles, shot put and javelin, but won't participate in the long jump – her highest-ranked event this season. The events that she is patriating in, however, will help her next week when she competes in the heptathlon – an event she won in 2016.
Â
The same is true for Josh Riley, who will compete in three events on Friday, but not the 400-meter hurdles – one of two events he ranks in the top 16 in the Big Sky for.
Â
Montana will particularly be absent in the running events, with just one of 14 athletes ranked in the top 16 competing. While some of the expected scorers might not compete, Friday is also an opportunity for some young, up-and-coming athletes to compete again, perhaps for the final time this season.
Â
Freshmen distance runners Rachel Torrey and Hannah Wylie are both registered for the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. Fellow freshman Jaydon Green will also run in two events, while another freshman, Kip Krebsbach, will compete in the 200 meters and first-year runner William Dauenhauer will race in the 800 meters.
Â
Even still, while many of Montana's top athletes set to rest and recover this weekend, a large portion will still be in action, trying to gain one last upper-hand before next week's Championships. Olivia Ellis will compete in both hurdle events, as will a variety of other athletes. The expected scorers are most represented in the field events, however. Previous scorers in the high jump Matt Quist and Jane Booth will both compete, as will all three of Montana's triple jumpers ranked in the top 16, led by Carla Nicosia.
Â
The same is true for most of Montana's top throwers, including Hana Feilzer, Holly Houston, Shawn Humphries and Brent Yeakey.
Â
The meet will begin Friday at 3:30 p.m. with a variety of field events. Running events begin at 4 p.m. Live results can be followed online.
