Special events for Griz fans have always surrounded the annual Gene Brosovich Grizzly Golf Invitational as former Montana, and NFL football stars make their way back to Missoula to socialize with fans and raise all-important dollars for the football program.
This year was no different as the team's supporters gathered at the Canyon River Golf Course in Missoula with former players last Thursday for a BBQ and silent auction before teeing-off Friday morning in the annual golf scramble.
But this year head coach Bobby Hauck and his staff had something new in store for some of the team's biggest supporters: he sent them to school. Graduate level Griz football 505 to be exact.
On Thursday morning, Hauck and the Grizzly coaching staff held the inaugural "Football 505, Graduate Level Griz" coaching clinic specifically designed for members of the team's Quarterback Club (the fundraising arm of Griz football) as part of the Brosovich golf week.
Over the course of five hours, QB Club members who donate at the $5,000 level or above gathered in the 1995 National Champion Team Room in the new Washington-Grizzly Champions Center to get an in-depth download of all things Griz football from Hauck and his staff.
No topic was off limits as the Montana coordinators and assistant coaches covered everything from offensive and defensive team philosophies to schemes and play-calling to recruiting strategy.
"I found the football clinic to be exciting, informative, and a lot of fun. The coaches did a great job of breaking down what they do, and what the players are doing on the field. As a football fan, it will add to my enjoyment of the games this fall," said Quarterback Club member Craig Ekegren.
"Getting this much access to the team is fun for us fans, but it makes us feel better knowing the funds raised go toward helping the Griz succeed on the field and in the classroom."
The Football 505 class was just one initiative in Hauck's drive to grow and expand the Quarterback Club, giving new opportunities for fans around the state to become part of the Grizzly family and get more exclusive access to the team than ever before.
"The Quarterback Club is critical in our ability to build a championship program," said Hauck. "From providing scholarship dollars to operational costs to funds for summer school, the support this group provides is imperative, and we can't thank them enough for their support."
Since arriving back at the University of Montana in late 2017, Hauck has made the growth and development of the Quarterback Club a top priority.
What was once just a Missoula-based weekly breakfast meeting, the QB Club will evolve this coming season with a new, member-friendly day and time, utilizing the latest conferencing technology to bring an interactive QB Club experience to new statewide chapters.
At each meeting, members around the state can tune in and ask questions about game analysis, scouting reports, team updates, recruiting updates, and more, helping separate fact from rumor. Quarterback Club members will truly be ambassadors for Griz football in their respective communities.
In addition to the above, QB Club member benefits include the exclusive signing day luncheon, members-only Griz football attire, and opportunities for pregame locker room access and travel with the team.
