Track & field athletes trying to find their roles, hit their peak Friday in Bozeman
2/20/2020 5:06:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Montana will travel to Bozeman on Friday for the adequately titled Big Sky Tuner. The meet is the final track & field contest prior to next week's Big Sky Championships.
Â
Friday will mark Montana's third trip to Bozeman this winter, with the Grizzlies also opening their season there in December and competing once again in January. This weekend, Montana will compete against athletes from Carroll College, Idaho State, Montana State, Montana Western and Southern Idaho.
Â
For some athletes, the meet will serve as a final tune-up for the Big Sky Championships, which begin Thursday in Pocatello, Idaho. Others will use Friday as an audition for one of the 52 spots allowed by each team on its Championship rosters (26 men and 26 women).
Â
Montana currently has 13 athletes in line to score at the Championships, with seven of them competing on Friday. That list includes Olivia Ellis, who holds current top-eight positions in both the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, and will compete in both events – plus the 200 meters – on Friday. On the men's side, Montana has strong marks in its throwing events, with Shawn Humphries (weight throw), Noah Ramirez (shot put) and Brent Yeakey (shot put) all throwing on Friday.
Â
The other six potential scorers, including 400-meter favorite Paul Johnstone, will use the weekend to rest and be at full strength come next week.
Â
Friday's meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's weight throw, men's high jump and women's pole vault. Action continues throughout the afternoon. Live results can be followed online.
