The Montana women's tennis team opened its two-match trip to Midwest with a competitive 7-0 loss to Michigan State on the Spartans home courts in East Lansing.
The Griz (1-4) had a tiebreaker opportunity to win the doubles point and had tiebreaker chances to pick up singles wins, with Bianca Bostrom forcing a third set superbreaker on court five, but were kept out of the win column. Michigan State improves to 5-3 with the win.
"Doubles is showing consistent fight. In singles, we are competing and putting ourselves in a great position to win matches," said head coach Steve Ascher. "These matches against power-five teams is a great way to build and stretch ourselves."
Defending Big Sky Player of the Week Lauren Dunlap and her doubles partner Alex Walker won their second-straight match as a pair, beating MSU's Memje/Stephens pair 7-5 on court three.
Meanwhile, Julia Ronney and Olivia Oosterbaan were on the verge of clinching the doubles point on court one but were tripped up 7-6 (9) in the tiebreaker, giving the point to the home team.
In singles, freshman Maria Goheen dropped a close first set 5-7 and forced a tiebreaker in the second before falling 6-7 (3) on court three. Similarly, Dunlap also forced a tiebreaker in the second set, falling 1-6, 6-7 (3) on court four.
The Griz now turn their attention to Xavier University for a neutral court dual in East Lansing on Sunday afternoon.
