Griz to miss championship tourney after tiebreaker decision from Big Sky

The Montana men's tennis team's 2021 season has come to an end following Saturday's win over Montana State, with the Big Sky Conference awarding the two championship tournament seeds in the north division to Portland State and Idaho.

The Grizzlies, Vikings, and Vandals each finished the regular season tied for first in the north at 3-1. After deliberation over a dispute in tiebreaker rules, the Big Sky Emergency Action Committee broke the tie Sunday afternoon using most individual wins against the common opponents locked in the 3-1 tie.

In March, Montana fell to PSU 6-1 on the road in Portland. The Griz later defeated Idaho 4-3 on April 9 for a total five total individual wins. The Vandals then defeated Portland State 4-1 on April 17, giving both teams seven individual wins. As such, Idaho will take the No. 1 seed, and PSU will receive the No. 2 seed from the north division at the Big Sky championship tournament in Phoenix starting May 1.

In an effort to reduce travel due to the ongoing global pandemic, the Big Sky Conference split the league into north and south divisions prior to the season starting. The conference also decreased the number of teams participating in the championship tournament from six to four for the 2021 season only.

Montana now finishes the year on a three-match win streak at 9-10 overall, and 3-1 in Big Sky play this season, with an unblemished 5-0 home record and an upset over No. 62 Gonzaga highlighting the season.

Portland State enters the tournament on a four-match losing streak at 7-9 overall, 3-1 in league play. Idaho goes to Phoenix at 7-5 overall with two straight wins over Montana State and Portland State.
The Grizzlies capped their season Saturday afternoon in Missoula with a 5-2 Brawl of the Wild victory over Montana State. They are expected to return to normal tournament action in the fall followed by the championship dual season in the spring of 2022 with the league's top six teams advancing to the championship tournament.
