The idea seemed to resonate, as 10 of Montana's 16 competitors recorded personal bests on the weekend, including senior Brent Yeakey, who on Friday set a school record in the discus.
Below are some of Saturday's highlights from the OSU High Performance Meet:
- Freshman Quincy Fast and senior Jacob Lamb are among the Big Sky's top 800 meters runners, with Fast ranking third and Lamb in seventh. Both were competitive on Saturday, finishing in under 1:52, with Lamb recording a PR (1:51.49).
- Junior Jaree Mane had a busy weekend, competing in five events in preparation for the heptathlon later this month at the Big Sky Championships. Her top event came on Saturday when she ran a time of 15.29 in the 100-meter hurdles, good for a PR and an eight-place finish.
- After running a lifetime best in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday (1:03.55), freshman Holly Sudol again PR'd on Saturday, this time in the women's 400 meters (58:15).
- Coming off a PR last weekend in the high jump, a clearance of 5-7 that ranks in the top five in the Big Sky, redshirt freshman Morgan Radtke competed in three events over the weekend, including the high jump, where she placed fourth (5-4.5).
- Freshman Olivia Lackland Henry ran a lifetime best in the women's 5,000 meters (17:26.17)
- A day after setting a school record in the men's discus, senior Brent Yeakey placed third in the shot put on Saturday, throwing 52-3.75. While that mark was lower than typical for Yeakey, he now ranks third in the Big Sky in the discus and seventh in the shot put. His discus mark ranks 36th in the NCAA West Regional rankings.
- Two of the region's top javelin throwers were again competitive on Saturday, with senior Dylan Kipp throwing 202-5 to finish second out of 16 competitors and freshman teammate Evan Todd reaching 190-1, to place sixth. Both throwers rank in the top 20 in the NCAA West Regional rankings and are in strong position to qualify for regionals. On the women's side, senior Kimberly Earhart led Montana in the women's javelin, with a top throw of 136-9.
Below offers a further look at Friday's highlights, which included Yeakey's record-breaking throw:
- Yeakey's best throw of 180-9 topped Brandon Forson's 2013 record of 177-9. Yeakey now owns Montana records for the men's outdoor discus, men's outdoor shot put and men's indoor shot put. The throw moves him into third place in the Big Sky this season with a PR of more than 8 feet. He beat out competitors from across the country, including several from Oregon of the Pac-12, plus the current Big Sky leader in the discus.
- Montana went 1-2 in the men's discus, a field that featured 22 throwers, with freshman Matt Ward finishing second with a PR of nearly 7 feet (175-6). The throw ranks fourth in the Big Sky this season. He also was within a foot of a PR in the men's hammer, placing fifth, with a top mark of 184-11.
- Sophomore Jansen Ziola will be competing in six events this weekend, in preparation for the heptathlon at the Big Sky Championships later this month. She is also one of the league's top long jumpers, though, and it showed on Friday. Ziola finished second in the women's long jump (18-11.75) on Friday and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.14). Ziola currently ranks second in the Big Sky in the long jump, and just four other league athletes have jumped 18-11.75 – her distance on Friday – this season. Ziola's time in the 400-meter hurdles was a PR and ranks seventh in the Big Sky this season.
- Sudol, a freshman, also PR'd in the women's 400-meter hurdles, finishing seventh with a time of 1:03.55, which would rank ninth in the Big Sky this season. Fast PR'd in the men's 1,500 meters (3:49.15), as did freshman Beatrix Frissell in the women's 5,000 meters (17:08.39) and Radtke in the women's 200 meters (26.53).
- On the women's side, junior Tanessa Morris finished fourth in the hammer with a respectable throw of 190-11, within 28 inches of her personal best, which leads the Big Sky Conference this season. Senior Holly Houston placed fourth in the discus (149-11). Sophomore Peterson Bohannon placed fourth in the men's long jump, coming close to a PR with a top jump of 22-11.75.
