Hauck honored for excellence on the field and in the classroom
11/22/2022 1:08:00 PM | Football
Record-breaking Montana safety Robby Hauck became one of just three defenders from the Big Sky Conference to be named a finalist for the 2022 Buck Buchanan Award FCS media outlet Stats Perform announced Tuesday.
Hauck was also honored for his academic success Tuesday when College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) named him to the Academic All-District team for a third-straight year.
Montana's all-time leading tackler, Hauck currently sits at 459 career stops in 51 starts for the Griz. With 95 to his name this season he needs just 15 more tackles this season to break Ronnie Hamlin's Big Sky record of 473. He currently ranks third all-time on the league's tackle table behind Kane Ione of Montana State, who totaled 471 between 2000-2003.
His 95 tackles this season are currently the fifth-most in the Big Sky and second-most among the league's playoff participants.
Montana started the year with three players on the watch list for the Buchanan Award, with Patrick O'Connell and Justin Ford each in the running and each in the midst of standout seasons.
Despite missing the bulk of three games to injury, O'Connell still leads the Big Sky in sacks with eight and tackles for loss with 12. After racking up an NCAA-best nine interceptions last year, Ford hasn't had the chance to build more stats this season either, with opposing quarterbacks avoiding his side of the field all together.
Academically, Hauck is already a two-time Academic All-American (first-team in 2020, second-team in 2021) and was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy – the "Academic Heisman" – earlier in the fall. His Academic All-District selection paves the way for him to become just the sixth three-time Academic All-American in Grizzly program history.
On Monday, Grizzly freshman punter Patrick Rohrbach also became a finalist for a national year-end award as the only specialist in the running for the Stats Perform Jerry Rice Award that goes to the nation's top overall freshman.
The Buchanan Award, first presented in 1995 and in its 28th season, is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career. A national media panel will select the Buchanan Award winner, with voting based on the regular season. The recipient will be announced at the FCS National Awards banquet on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas – on the eve of the national championship game.
