SEDONA, Ariz. – The Montana women's golf team finished up its first day at the Red Rocks Invitational, finishing up the first round of 18 and the majority of the second. The Griz shot 309 in the first round of the tournament and were in the midst of finishing the last two-to-three holes in the second, sitting at 16th.
"The players all showed very good moments of play. I was very encouraged to see nice stretches as well with two, three, four, five six, seven holes put together solidly," said assistant coach Jim Mee.
"There was a lot of really good golf, and you can see there was a lot of rust. As we progress through the season, as the spring moves along, hopefully, each round we can start getting rid of that rust and we're able to save ourselves in our short game just because that's the part we don't have a lot of access to in the winter."
The conditions were perfect at the Oakcreek Country Club, with a high of 67 degrees and zero clouds in sight.
Jessica Ponce led the Griz for the second consecutive tournament, scoring 74 in her first round of the day. The junior had three birdies on the day, helping her sit tied for 34th with teammate Kylie Esh.
"Jess is always pretty solid. She does a good job of thinking her way around the golf course and not making big mistakes," said Mee.
Esh wasn't far behind Ponce. The senior shot 76 for the first round of 18, logging three birdies. The senior started to lead the team in the second round with junior Emmy Sundby, both sitting at 75.
"Kylie played very solid in the first round. She had a couple of bad holes that cost her a couple of bad breaks but she handled it really well and was able to push through it and save her round," added Mee.
Junior Sundby shot 78 in the first round, earning one birdie and tying for 62nd in the tournament.
"Emmy was a good surprise because this is only her second time out this season. She played really well in the first round," said Mee.
Sophomores Madison Cecil and Meredith Boos finished the first round sitting nine over par and 13 over par. Both underclassmen improved their scores in the second round, with Cecil scoring 76 and Boos scoring 80.
The Griz will be back on the green tomorrow to conclude the tournament, finishing the second and third rounds with a tee time of 9:15 a.m. (MT).
