Outdoor track & field season opens this weekend with Al Manuel Invitational
3/23/2022 12:30:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
During the winter months, when Montana's track & field student-athletes are training in a crowded gym, the idea is generally to get in, get your work done and get out so that the next group can come in and use the facility.
Â
That shifts during the outdoor season, when Dornblaser Field provides ample room to work out. And now, taking advantage of some recent warm weather, head coach Clint May is seeing the benefits to that first hand.
Â
Some days he sees that in the timing. With warmer weather, and without the need to get out of the way so that a teammate can begin, he sees his student-athletes hanging around the facility longer to get extra reps in.
Â
Other days, he sees it in the support. As runners do their laps on the track, they'll work their way past the jump pit, throwers and other running groups. It's common for May to see them in awe of each other while they're in the midst of their own training.
Â
"Everyone is just excited," May said. "You can sense it in their practice habits and sense it in how they're interacting with each other. Everyone is just really looking forward to getting started."
Â
Montana's outdoor season will begin this weekend with the Al Manuel Invitational. The fact that the outdoor season is here is exciting. The fact that the athletes get to compete in front of their home fans for the first time in nearly a year is the cherry on top.
Â
The meet will begin on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the hammer throw and shot put. Saturday will feature a full day of competition, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the javelin and running events starting at 11.
Â
The annual invitational will bring athletes from across the state and region to Missoula. Scheduled to compete are athletes from Big Sky foes Eastern Washington and Montana State, in addition to a handful of Treasure State programs, like Carroll, MSU Billings, Montana Tech, Montana Western and Rocky Mountain College.
Â
With temperatures expected in the upper-60s, the Grizzlies are hoping to see the stands full for their first meet of the season. Admission is free.
