MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Montana women's golf team wrapped up its first day at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, sitting in 21st place after 36 holes. The Griz scored 312 in the first round and finished the second round scoring 322.
"The golf course won today. We just didn't handle it very well across the board," said head coach Kris Nord. "I was happy with our driving, but everything else wasn't up to par for us to score well."
It's always tough to stay on top of your game for a round of 18, but even tougher when you're playing 36 holes in one day.
"There's a bit of a mental and physical fatigue factor in the second round. It's tough to keep it going. Everybody's doing the same thing, it's not an excuse. I really expected us to score better and I'm hoping we can respond tomorrow," said Nord.
Grizzly Kylie Esh led the way, ending the day tied for 62nd in the tournament. The senior tallied one birdie on the day, which happened to be in the first round. Esh scored 76 in the first 18, and finished the second 18 scoring 79.
Junior Jessica Ponce was close behind, totaling two birdies and scoring 81 in the first round. The junior turned it around for the second round, scoring three over par, and finished the day tied for 65th in the tournament.
Allison Sobol logged the most birdies for the day, tallying three in the first round. Sobol scored 75 in the first 18, then finished the day scoring 87.
UM's Tricia Joyce scored 10 over par in the first round, and nine over par in the second.
Madison Cecil finished the day posting two birdies, helping her score 80 in the first round. The sophomore finished the evening scoring 88 in the second round.
"We'll have to improve our approach shots, short game and putting in order for us to get out of the cellar tomorrow and move up," said Nord.
The Griz will be back in action tomorrow, finishing the last round of 18 at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, with a tee time of 8:30 a.m. (MT).
