
Montana leads Big Sky with 74 spring academic selections

The University of Montana Department of Athletics had 74 spring-sport student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors, the league announced on Wednesday.

Montana's total led the Big Sky Conference.

Twenty-three women's outdoor track and field athletes were recognized, 20 from the men's outdoor track and field team, 11 from softball, seven from women's golf and men's tennis, and six from women's tennis.
Â
Coach Kris Nord's women's golf team led the Big Sky in that sport with seven selections. Coach Melanie Meuchel's softball team and coach Jason Brown's men's tennis team both tied for first with 11 and seven selections, respectively.

Coach Steve Ascher's women's tennis team tied for the second-most selections in that sport.
Â
Montana, with 56, also led the league in honorees holding a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Â
To earn Academic All-Big Sky honors, a student-athlete must have a 3.2 GPA or higher and have competed in at least half of their team's competitions during the spring season.
Â
In addition to Big Sky accolades, both of Montana's tennis teams earned academic honors recently from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Â
Both programs repeated as ITA All-Academic Teams, while eight players from both programs were named ITA Scholar Athletes, which requires a lofty 3.5 GPA.

To earn ITA All-Academic Team honors, programs must have a squad grade point average of 3.2.
Â
Montana's men's tennis program has now earned ITA All-Academic Team status each of the last five seasons, while the women have earned it in an impressive eleven times since 2009.
