Griz head to Boise to open fall tournament season

MISSOULA - Montana men's tennis head coach Jason Brown takes a young squad to Boise this week, with four of the six traveling Grizzlies set to play the first college tennis matches of their careers.
The Griz get the 2022-23 season underway at the General Patton Fall Invitational tournament, set to run Friday through Sunday, Sept. 16-18, at Boise State's Appleton Tennis Center.
Montana is one of five teams set to compete at the General Patton Invite, a new tournament named after legendary BSU head coach Greg Patton. In a strong field, the Griz will square off against players from the defending Big Sky champion Idaho Vandals, Saint Mary's, Utah State, and the host Broncos.
Senior Josh Watkins and sophomore Sam Baldwin will lead Montana at the tournament as the only Grizzlies to have ever played a college match. True freshmen Tom Bittner, George Russell, Jake Watkins, and Baltazar Wiger-Nordas will all test themselves at the next level in their first college sets.
With a group of youngsters set to face some of the region's top competition, Brown is tempering his expectations this week in the team's first reps of the fall season.
"The goal is honestly just to get some match play in and see where we're at. We just want to put a good base down for what we're trying to accomplish this year and keep developing that effort-based culture," said Brown.
Montana is coming off a banner 2022 duals season where it made a run at the program's second conference championship, eventually ending in the league's tournament semifinal. Led by the likes of senior Big Sky MVP Ed Pudney and Grizzly Cup winner Oisin Shaffrey, Montana must now look to replace that senior-laden squad.
The General Patton Invite is the first of six fall tournaments for the Griz this season. Montana heads to Salt Lake City twice in the coming weeks for a pair of invitational tournaments that bookend the Idaho State Invite in Pocatello and the ITA Mountain Regional in Albuquerque. The Griz cap the fall season in Spokane at Gonzaga's Bulldog Classic Nov. 4-6.
